Endometriosis: Endometriosis is uterine like tissue that develops outside of the uterus creating scar tissue to surrounding organs. Symptoms create significant pain during menstruation.
Manual therapy With pain comes muscle dysfunction and spasm. Your pelvic floor therapist will help determine which muscles are guarded/have higher tone. You will be trained with how to restore the muscles appropriate length/tension and muscle activation pattern so the muscles that may be causing pain can let go.
Treatment should also consider the surrounding organs. A technique called visceral manipulation can be used to help facilitate motility around surrounding organs in your pelvic cavity including your cecum, appendix, sigmoid colon, and ureters can become scarred.
Coordination training: the pelvic floor coordinates with your deep core and your diaphragm (a primary breathing muscle). If your pelvic floor is in pain and inhibited from working appropriately, the core and diaphragm will likely be compensating. This compensation to these 2 organs can create a problem with abdominal pressure thus creating more stress to the pelvic floor and a vicious cycle.
Reducing inflammatory foods such as gluten, lactose, processed foods, and sugar can help reduce pain and inflammation with menses. Consultation with a registered dietician might be warranted.
Exercising routinely can keep the partners in crime: the core and the diaphragm functioning properly. The core and the diaphragm functioning optimally takes work and stress off of your pelvic floor.
